The first thing to know about Greenwich Village in NY is that although the name looks like “green-witch,” you pronounce it “grenitch.” This part of the city runs from Broadway to the Hudson River, and from “below” (south) of 14th Street down to Houston (pronounced “house-ton”). This part of town has the former reputation as being full of artists, but many people bemoan that the high cost of housing has diminished that aspect. Nonetheless, this is still known as the funky part of the City, full of cafes and restaurants, eclectic boutiques and some of the more colorful members of the resident population.

There are many parks in this part of town, the largest of which is Washington Square Park, located right near New York University. This is a preferred location for street performers and a favorite place for locals to just sit and have lunch. There are tons of restaurants in the area, but grabbing a slice of the infamous NY pizza is a fave for those on-the-go.

One of the biggest attractions for locals and visitor is the massive NY’s Village Halloween Parade. This extravaganza can draw upwards of 2 million revelers and is considered the largest Halloween event in the entire US. If people-watching is your thing, this is one event that’s not to be missed! Suggestion for attendees: remember to dress warm! Tuck any ID and monies well inside your insulation clothing layer and then add a costume on top of that, securing yourself against pickpockets in the massive crowd.
