Famous for being the home of NBC's The Today Show and a seasonal ice-skating rink, Rockefeller Center is a hub of art, media and culture.
Rockefeller Center is located in the area of New York City known as "Midtown." It runs from 5th to 7th Avenue, between 47th and 51st streets. The famed Radio City Music Hall is part of this area, as are the home studios for NBC's NY television operations. The Today Show has their set down on ground level, with the studios for shows like Saturday Night Live and the NBC Evening News being located upstairs in the building.
The Rockefeller Building itself is located at 30 Rockefeller Center and is topped by the famous Top Of The Rock Observation Deck. The view it offers from the 70th floor of New York City is unparalleled and includes the Chrysler Building, Times Square, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Year-round there are different events held here, but the one that is most famous is the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. This ceremony takes place at the end of November and is covered on national television. The tree remains on display into the beginning of January. Later in the year, catch unique fundraisers, arts show, orchid shows, special movies, farmers markets and much more. It's also here that the October through April ice rink can be found.
The area is rounded out with over three dozen restaurants and over 100 retail stores for shopping. A day trip with lunch is a lovely way to explore and visit Rockefeller Center, but it also is a good warm-up for dinner and a show. Quick food to-go is available from luscious bakeries, chocolatiers, and cafes with world-class sit-down fare as well.
