San FranciscoExploring the City by the Bay
San Francisco offers a lot packed into a small area, so grab a jacket and get ready to hit the streets!
San Francisco is one of America’s top vacation and business destinations and many people who visit often wish they could stay there. Beware, the small city area (7 miles by 3 miles approx.) plus the moderate climate has brought some of the highest real estate prices in the nation to the City by the Bay. There is a variety of well-connected public transit that runs in SF, so leaving the car in the ‘burbs or parked at the hotel can work well for a lot of people. In the city, the system to use is MUNI, which features street cars, busses and the infamous cable cars. Day or week-long passes are great for visitors and will allow for unlimited travel during the specified time period. If you want to sojourn to the East or South Bay areas, Bay Area Rapid Transit, known locally as BART, offers high-speed train options and now goes direct to San Francisco Airport as well. Many visitors to SF are on business and wind up at Moscone Center. Rest assured, you're in the midst of the most transit-accessible with that location! The appellation “Frisco” is not a verbal abbreviation used by locals, in fact, referring to SF that way can often make a warm social situation turn a bit chilly. Speaking of chill, be prepared for fog to roll in unexpectedly any time of the year, and in the summer, be prepared for it to suddenly burn off for a few hours before rolling right back in again. Much of the city can be enjoyed on foot, but be prepared for a few hills, especially in the downtown area. Year-round there are events and celebrations, both ethnic in orientation and happenings that are as eclectic as San Francisco itself.
