The Snows of Salt Lake CityIf winter sports are your thing, check out this skiing and snowboardFor those who don't want a remote ski resort experience, Salt Lake City is a veritable ski Mecca with all the comforts and features of a big city.
Long before it hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics, Salt Lake City, UT was known as one of the top powder skiing destinations on the world and probably the top ski destination in the US. However, the television coverage let a lot more people know just how beautiful the area is and the facilities in the post-Olympic era are even better. The area around Salt Lake City hosts many ski and snowboarding resorts, most located a half an hour (Alta, Brighton, Snowbird, Solitude) to an hour's drive (Deer Valley, Park City, Snowbasin, The Canyons) from the city itself. Depending on what you are interested in, you can stay in the city or at the snow and share the entertainments of both. If you are planning a big winter vacation with the family, consider renting a house and having everyone stay together. If it's just you and a friend trying to get in as much hardcore skiing as you can, perhaps a bed and breakfast is all you need. If you live somewhere where you don't usually drive in snow, try making your accommodations so that you can get shuttles or taxis for you local transit needs. Checking online ahead of time is a great way to find deals on accommodations and especially lift tickets. Often you can find deals for weekday packages that are cheaper than weekends during the really peak times of the year! If only some of the vacation party is hitting the slopes, look up theatrical events or local museum shows ahead of time so that the folks who would prefer to stay indoors have a pre-made list of potential things to do during the day.
