» alansbigplate - List Your Top Five Cities To See Before You Die

Everyone's got that mental tick list of cities they want to see befoe they die, surely? I've listed my five must-sees that I'd love to get to here -http://urbantravel.suite101.com/blog.cfm... Would you agree with my choices? If not, what would be your top five cities to see before you die, and why?

Having only been out of the country to Mexico, this is an easy one for me. I have to agree that Rome is one of mine too but not #1.:)

1)Sydney, Australia
2)Dublin, Ireland
3)Honolulu, Hawaii
4)Athens, Greece
5)Rome or Venice, Italy

What? No American cities, David? New York, San Francisco, Boston, L.A. don't pique your interest?

Sydney is #1 on my list. Oh, London, too.

Mine weren't really in any particular order. Bizarrely, if they were, Vilnius would probably be top, but only because I'm currently intrigued by it. Iquitos will probably be the long-term goal, though, as I know I'll have managed Rome and Vilnius by this time next year.

Good choices on Sydney and Venice though - I love both of them, even if the first is dulled by over-familiarity and I was determined not to like the latter due to overhype. Athens nearly made my list too...

Boston, Washington DC and Philadelphia interest me greatly, as do a fair few in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico (I like my history and frontier towns, as you might have guessed). But top five? Nah - afraid not. Probably not even top 20, actually, but then again I do have strange tastes at times.

If you ever make it to Sydney, feel free to drop me a line for a few tips. I'm heading back there for a few weeks in November (via L.A. as it happens) and I'm looking forward to it tremendously.

My top two are easy Toronto and Vancouver, both look interesting in their own right but the highlight would be the three days on the train between the two!

Third I would join the "I want to go to Sydney" club that seems to be developing here.

Fourth has to be Cape Town for the views from Table Mountain.

The last one is difficult, I got a list of about 10 but I think it has to be Belfast in Northern Ireland. To my shame I live an hour's flight away and have never been. Looks to have so much history and culture - I will get there soon!

Plenty of US cities on the nearly list especially San Francisco and Sacremento - but the last place on earth I want to visit is also in the States - Las Vegas!

1. Venice.

Venice is sinking and
I'm going under

Sorry, a musical lapse there. (It's a song by Spirit of the West. It starts playing in my head every time I think of Venice).

Why Venice? No cars. It's impossible to take a bad picture there. It's mysterious and dreamy and evocative. Every corner has a secret.

er, um, after that, get out of the cities.
